What is a Defensible Fire Zone?

A defensible fire zone is an area around a building or structure that has been changed to reduce the risk of wildfire damage. These areas can be created in many ways, such as removing plants, using fire-resistant materials, and installing sprinkler systems. Creating a defensible zone aims to create a buffer around a structure to help stop or slow a wildfire, which can give firefighters a better chance of protecting the area.

Defensible fire zones are usually established in areas at high risk of wildfire, specifically places with dry, flammable plants or frequent wildfires. These areas can be found in rural, suburban, or urban areas.

Zone 1: The lean, clean, and green zone

Defensive fire zone 1, the lean, clean, and green zone, is the second layer of a defensible fire zone. It extends from 5 to 30 feet and is designed to provide an additional level of protection for the building or structure.

To create Zone 1, we remove excess vegetation and maintain the landscaping to reduce the risk of wildfire. This involves removing dead or dying plants, ladder fuels, pruning vegetation, and chipping and hauling away all cleaned-up materials.

This creates a buffer that can slow the spread of a wildfire and give firefighters a better chance of protecting buildings. Maintaining this zone regularly is essential, so you should make this cleanup annual. Overgrown and poorly maintained landscaping increases the risk of wildfire.

One key element of the lean, clean, and green zone is removing excess vegetation. Removing dead or dying plants on the ground, in the trees, and shrubs will reduce their fuel load.

Using fire-resistant building materials, home hardening, and landscaping elements in zone 1 is essential. These can include metal roofs, non-combustible siding, and more. These help reduce the risk of wildfire damage, as they are less likely to ignite and burn in the event of a wildfire.

Maintaining your landscaping and cleanliness in the lean, clean, green zone is essential. This involves watering plants to keep them healthy and reducing unnecessary vegetation. It is also necessary to clear the area of debris and other flammable materials.

Is your home ready for the wildfire season?

In addition to Zone 1, California laws that require Fire Hazard Severity Zones are implemented. These zones include a fuel reduction zone and an ember-resistant zone. The fuel reduction zone is where flammable vegetation has been removed or thinned. The ember-resistant zone helps prevent embers from reaching the building or structure. Together, they work to create a comprehensive system of protection for structures in wildfire areas.

Defensible fire zones are an essential tool for protecting buildings from wildfire damage. By creating a buffer, the risk of wildfire damage can be reduced. You also give firefighters a better chance of saving your home. While removing the risk of wildfires altogether is impossible, defensible fire zones help provide better protection.
