Creating a Fuel Break in Burney

Reducing Wildfire Fuel While Protecting the Landscape

Our crew is currently working on a project in Burney, California, creating a fuel break as part of ongoing wildfire fuel-reduction work.

Fuel reduction is an important part of wildfire preparedness. Grind Fire Defense uses vegetation management practices designed to reduce the amount of fuel available to a wildfire and help slow its spread across a property.

What Is a Fuel Break?

Grind Fire Defense offers both fire break construction and maintenance and shaded fuel breaks as part of our wildfire-prevention services.

A fire break creates a cleared area intended to act as a barrier against advancing flames. A shaded fuel break takes a different approach by carefully thinning vegetation while preserving tree canopy. Both are designed around reducing available wildfire fuels rather than simply clearing everything from the landscape.

Fuel Reduction Is More Than Removing Trees

Wildfire fuel reduction can include thinning smaller trees and shrubs, removing ladder fuels, pruning, clearing brush and understory vegetation, and removing hazardous fuels from the property.

Grind Fire Defense cuts, chips, and hauls hazardous vegetation as part of this work. By reducing shrubs, trees, brush, and other heavy fuels, fuel-reduction work can help reduce the ability of wildfire to spread quickly across the landscape.

The Burney Project

The work underway in Burney is a great example of the kind of vegetation-management and fuel-break work our crews perform throughout Northern California.

The goal is not simply to make a property look cleared. Grind Fire Defense focuses on reducing hazardous vegetation while respecting the natural landscape and creating a finished property that is safer, cleaner, and thoughtfully managed.

Wildfire Protection Built for the Property

Every property is different. Grind Fire Defense evaluates terrain, vegetation, and the needs of the site to develop a plan appropriate for that property. Our services include wildfire fuel reduction, ladder-fuel reduction, brush clearing, forestry work, fire-break construction and maintenance, and other vegetation-management services.
