With the Carr fire mostly contained, you might assume that maintaining a defensible space around your home is no longer necessary.
Experts will assure you that it is.
As Dusty Gyves, the fire captain for Cal Fire Station No. 58, fought the fire, he noticed a large portion of people who had not complied with the law to make outdoor spaces around their homes less attractive to oncoming blazes and embers.
But the Carr and Hirz fires should be a wake-up call. Nothing is foolproof, but Gyves said clearing defensible space tremendously reduces the risk of someone’s home being destroyed.
Here’s what you need to know.
It’s the space between a structure, like your home, and wildland area that acts as a buffer to slow or stop wildfires. Cal Fire defines it in two zones. Zone 1 is a 30-foot perimeter around structures, including decks. The second is 100 feet out from structures.
